- It is a TV series adaptation of Hiroyuki Itsuki’s bestseller novel and won the Best Award in the JBA Awards. This impactful period drama was set in Chikuho, Fukuoka in the Taisho to early Showa era. It portrays the growth of Shinsuke Ibuki, the son of a coal miner, and the robust human drama that unfolds in a coal mining region. With Chikuho area’s natural features in the background, the series portrays the love between men and women, familial love, the friendship between men, and sexual awakening, among other aspects. The cast includes Mayumi Ogawa, Kinya Kitaoji, Atsuo Nakamura, Jun Eto, and Kumiko Akiyoshi. Shigezo, a coal miner who lives only with his son Shinsuke, remarries Tae who works as a waitress at a cafe. Shinsuke is raised by Tae, but not long after that Shigezo is killed in a coal mine accident. Then, Tae falls ill due to working too hard, so the two go two live with Ryugoro, a member of the yakuza crime syndicate who once fought over Tae with Shigezo. Eventually, Shinsuke grows and reaches adolescence... The first season “Chikuho” (26 episodes) was followed by a second season “Jiritsu” (26 episodes) in which Shinsuke leaves home and moves to Tokyo to go to university. It portrays how Shinsuke grows as a person while experiencing various encounters and stressful issues. The Gate of Youth has been adapted into TV series and films multiple times.
