Overview
The first installation of the NHK Saturday Drama Screenwriter Series Shintaro Yoshioka is a Deputy Chief at a security company. As a survivor from the kamikaze squad, he resents the way young people born after the war live their lives. In the first episode of the Taichi Yamada Series, the first installation of the Saturday Drama Screenwriter Series, two young men named Tatsuo Shibata and Yohei Sugimoto join Yoshioka’s team, but they frequently confront him. Yoshioka first warns them, bringing down their arrogance: “You’re weak. Don’t forget that.” When Yoshioka saves Etsuko Shimazu, who later joins the company, from jumping off to take her own life in the building for which he was providing security, he lets his frustration against the postwar generation explode: “I hate young people! Young people during the war were more earnest whether for living or for dying.” However, in response to Yoshioka’s voicing of thoughts, the writer, Taichi Yamada, makes Sugimoto say: “Those were the ones that began the war!” Yamada not only incorporates the thoughts of Koji Tsuruta, the actor who plays Yoshioka, about the kamikaze squads, but also subtly criticizes them. This is an example of Yamada’s passion work, postwar democracy, at his best. Among the episodes of the Taichi Yamada Series, the discrepancy of values between different generations is most apparent in “Hijo Kaidan.” The subsequent episodes revolve around the drama that takes place in the places they provide security for.
