Overview
It is the first show aired on Saturday Wide Theater, which later became one of the major two-hour drama programs. Toki yo, Tomare was also the first installment of the Inaka Keiji series starring Kiyoshi Atsumi. The show was written by Akira Hayasaka and won the ACA National Arts Festival Excellence Award in the TV series division. What gained popularity was Kiyoshi Atsumi and how he plays a Columbo-like scruffy detective who pursues the murderer in a case whose statute of limitations is about to expire. Other members of the cast include Keiju Kobayashi, Yoko Takahashi, Etsuko Ichihara, and Guts Ishimatsu. The Inaka Keiji series aired from 1977 to 1980 for four installments. In 1995, a remake starring Eikichi Yazawa aired under the title Toki yo Tomare. The story is set in Hita City, Oita, which is famous for its production of Japanese cedar. Matsujiro Sugiyama is a detective who has never been promoted at city’s police station. He has been pursuing a murderer who has been on the run for 15 years, and the case’s statute of limitations is about to expire. One day, Sugiyama is suddenly stunned while watching a boxing match on TV broadcasting live from Tokyo. He dashes toward the TV screen. On the screen he sees Osamu Kunizaki, the murderer that he has been pursuing. Sugiyama is granted permission to spend five days to search for Kunizaki. He tags up with a woman detective and goes after Kunizaki...
