Overview
The drama is based on the namesake short story by Seicho Matsumoto. Summer 1926, a man is found dead in Amagi mountain pass. Three people crossed the mountain pass at the time of the man’s death: a man, a boy, and a female prostitute. The 16-year-old boy gets fed up with the family blacksmith business in the town of Shimoda. He runs away from home and heads to Shizuoka where his older brother lives. The boy has on him 16 sen of pocket money and a hand-carved knife for protection. Seeing an intimidating carpenter trying to pass the mountain pass as well, the boy gets decides to return home. But then, Hana Otsuka comes walking toward him barefooted from the direction of Shuzenji. Hana has absconded without repaying indenture loans to Aimaiya, a brothel in Izu Nagaoka, and is heading south from Shimoda to Izu Oshima. Hana speaks softly to the boy, who is attracted by her beauty and has decided to return to Shimoda. On the way, it starts to rain and the two seek shelter in a cabin. But there they meet the carpenter... The truth behind the case is revealed through recollections of Tajima, the detective who later questioned Hana as a suspect, and the present occurrences being told alternately. Won the ACA National Arts Festival Grand Prize.
