Overview
It is a classic socio-political TV drama that documents the Nishiyama Incident, in which a top-secret agreement made between the Japanese and US governments following the Okinawa Reversion Agreement of 1971 was leaked to the media. Won the Excellence Award in the TV Awards. Based on a book by documentary writer Hisae Sawachi, the show depicts the outcome of the incident from the perspectives of three people: a newspaper journalist, a female official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Hisae Sawachi. Through their perspectives, the show raises many questions about topics that are relevant even today, such as the people’s right to know, the nature of journalism, and the tyrannical exercise of power. In 1971, a newspaper journalist Ishiyama is on the hunt for a scoop concerning a secret agreement stating that the Japanese government will take on the land restoration costs owed by the US government to land owners. Ishiyama successfully obtains secret information by establishing a relationship with Kinuko, an official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. However, Ishiyama and Kinuko are later arrested for violating the National Public Service Act and put to trial. Hisae Sawachi develops an interest in this case and interviews those who were involved... TV drama Mitsuyaku was created in 1978 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of TV Asahi. It received high acclaim and was released as a film in 1988. The film was selected as an invited film for the 1989 Moscow International Film Festival. A revival screening was held in 2010.
