- This wild, bizarre jidaigeki (period drama) earned the name “domestic jidaigeki serial” and “guerrilla jidaigeki.” It is a TV series adaptation of a manga by George Akiyama, produced by Ishihara International Productions. It presents a humor-rich picture of ordinary people’s family life and personal relationships in the late Edo period. Whenever the leading character Kumo, played by Tetsuya Watari, sees a woman, he says: “Hey cutie, wanna have some fun with me?” Such scenes became well known. Despite being set in the late Edo period, the series includes numerous unique scenes with a modern touch, such as those where a character sings while playing an acoustic guitar, Kame does the cleaning while singing “Wanted” by Pink Lady, and Watari hums “Yogiri yo Konyamo Arigatou” by Yujiro Ishihara. Due to the series’ popularity, a remake was created in 1990 starring Beat Takeshi. It was also adapted into an anime film in 1982. Kumo runs a wholesale store called Yumeya in late Edo in Shinagawa-juku, one of Edo’s post stations along the Tokaido road. He lives with his wife Kame and 11-year-old son Shinnosuke.
