- Overview
- Episode 3 of a series that addresses the issue of Japanese identity through the love and suffering of three generations of Japanese immigrants to the US. In 1905, Ryo and Kokichi Kikuchi move to Hawaii in search of a new world abroad. Ryo, the older sister, has an arranged marriage with a man named Buhei Kumagaya who she has only seen in a photo, and begins working for a sugar cane company. But that is not enough for Kokichi. He moves to San Francisco with a hope of joining the white community. For three generations, the family tries hard to get through life in the face of discrimination caused by the anti-Japanese sentiment of white Americans (first generation), conflict between Japanese families during WW2 (second generation), and the difficulties of marrying a black person (third generation). Beginning with the Amerika Monogatari series, NHK created five installments of the Special Drama series that addressed the history of modern Japanese mentality, the final one being Nihon no Omokage. In addition, Amerika Monogatari triggered the creation of various drama series revolving around the difficulties of Japanese immigrants, including Nami no Bon (1983) and 99 Years of Love: Japanese Americans (2010).
