- Overview
- Aired to commemorate the 1200th program of Toshiba Sunday Theater, this multi-POV TV drama depicts the Chushingura narrative from the perspective of the female family members and lovers of the Ako ronin (masterless samurai). It does not include the scene where the ronin raid Kira’s mansion, and Kira Kozuke no suke does not appear. It garnered overwhelming popularity among female viewers and achieved a peak audience rating of 42.6% (per Video Research’s Kanto District survey), the highest ever rating for Toshiba Sunday Theater. December 1703, 47 Ako ronin led by Oishi Kuranosuke are planning to raid Kira Kozuke no suke’s mansion to avenge the death of their former lord Asano Naganori, who was forced to commit seppuku (suicide by disembowelment) two years earlier. Kuranosuke’s wife Riku and the others learn about the plan, but they carry on living their respective lives. And on December 14, the ronin set off to Kira’s mansion. As very few historical sources have remained about the women associated with the 47 ronin, the scriptwriter, Sugako Hashida, presented a vivid picture of the relationships between the ronin and the women by daringly incorporating fiction into the narrative.
