This first installment of the Kanebo Human Special series featured TV series adaptations of works that won the Excellence Award in the Yomiuri Women’s Human Documentary Award. It achieved a high audience rating of over 30%. The story depicts how a nurse working in a children’s ward begins to think about the nature of life through interacting with a deformed child who was born with an incurable disorder. Kaori Momoi, the leading actor, and other famous actors suppress their respective unique styles and play the staff of a children’s ward in the 1980s in a matter-of-fact manner, giving the series an even more serious feel. Hatsuko is a young nurse working in a children’s ward. She is in charge of the 16-month-old patient in Room No.0, also known as Taro. The patient is a boy who has lost both eyes and all limbs; he is a deformed child who is simply waiting for death. His parents were informed that Taro was a stillborn, and his existence has been kept secret. Hatsuko fears that Taro might be used for pediatric research. To leave at least some proof of his existence, even if for a short while, she swaddles Taro and takes him outside to show him the world outside...
