Overview
Interpretations of The Tale of Genji vary depending on which part of the enormous work you focus on. This TV series is mainly based on the so-called “Murasaki no Yukari” narrative, which revolves around Fujitsubo, Murasaki no Ue, and Onna Sannomiya. Eight beautiful women engage in a love affair with Hikaru Genji. Mukoda’s script not only captures the magnificent scale of illustrated narrative handscrolls from the Heian period, but also vividly portrays the lives of Hikaru Genji and the various women around him from multiple angles, such as the joy and evanescence of love and the mysteries of fate. Hikaru Genji was born as the second son of Emperor Kiritsubo. Genji’s mother, Kiritsubo Consort, monopolizes the emperor’s affection, but she dies when Genji was three years old. The emperor soon welcomes Fujitsubo, who is the living image of Kiritsubo Consort, as his court lady. At first, Genji adores Fujitsubo as a mother, but before he knows it, he falls in love with her. One day, Genji reveals his uncontainable emotions to Fujitsubo and holds her tightly in his arms. However, she says to him: “I cannot commit any more sins. We can never meet again.” Following this, Genji embarks on a journey of love... Kuniko Mukoda won the Galaxy Award for program highly recommended for the script for this series and other works.
