Overview
Aired on the Saturday Drama slot, the show is based on Seicho Matsumoto’s documentary novel Ku no Shiro. The novel covers the failure of Ataka Industries, which became an issue in 1975, by portraying the figures who were involved in the incident. In the late 1960s, an article about oil catches the eye of Jiro Uesugi, president of Esaka America. The article reports that a company owned by Sasshin, a businessman with political influence, plans to construct an oil refinery in Canada. This is an appealing project for Esaka, as the company does not have an oil division and has to put up with ranking 10th in the industry. At his own discretion, Uesugi pays a huge sum of 60 million dollars to conclude an oil agent agreement with Sasshin. Shortly after this, however, the Yom Kippur War and oil crisis engulf the world, as if to mock Uesugi. Although extremely talented, pianist Maki Matsuyama has still not been able gain success, and she goes to live in the apartment of her boyfriend Shuji Sekine. One day, her talent catches the eye of Yozo, the owner of Esaka Industries, and she is given the opportunity to study music in New York. Yozo has no interest in business; his purpose in life is to collect works of art and support young, talented artists. Maki meets Uesugi in New York and soon starts a relationship with him.
