- Based on Junichi Watanabe’s novel Shojo no Shinu Toki, Kirigirisu is a medical drama that revolves around doctors who desperately struggle to save a young girl’s life. It pursues the dignity of life through this theme. Won the 36th ACA National Arts Festival Excellence Award. It gained popularity for the realistic and gripping performance by the leading actor Ken Ogata who played a doctor, as well as by Eiji Okuda and Kimiko Ikegami. In a hospital in Kobe, a young girl with cardiomyopathy has a sudden heart attack and goes into a state of suspended animation. Aritsu, an experienced doctor, performs a cardiac massage while getting drenched in sweat. He instructs a young doctor—who is just standing there in confusion—to deliver oxygen manually with an artificial respirator. He provides precise instructions to the nurses, too. But no matter how many cardiac massages he performs, the girl does not recover from cardiopulmonary arrest. Eventually, Aritsu declares that he must cut open the patient’s chest and massage her heart directly with his hands. Aritsu keeps on performing cardiac massages with single-minded focus, saying “When we stop, that is when she dies.” But even after this, the girl does not show any vital signs. How long will his efforts continue? The moment of decision approaches...
