A pioneering drama about aging
Overview
It was a time when people used to say: “Christmas cakes and women are worth less after 24.” Three single women are approaching the marriageable age of 24: Nobuyo, who works in a chewing gum factory; Kumiko, a member of the Odakyu Romancecar crew; and Kaori, who has a clerical job at a major trading company. They all think it would be boring to get married right away and want to create a great memory for themselves. All three of them come up with the idea of traveling abroad, and they first meet at a meeting for package tours. Afterwards, while getting hurt by pursing romantic sparks, the three begin to seriously think about what it is they are really looking for. This exploded in the form of a rebellion—hijacking the wedding reception of Nobuyo who has just got married through an arranged marriage. Taichi Yamada presents women and youth in a unique way, not just depicting the emotional conflicts of love and marriage but also integrating the three women’s personalities and ways of life with those of their families. The phrase “It’s boring,” which the women use to express dissatisfaction with their everyday (prearranged) lives, is often used by women who appear in later Yamada drama series.
