- Overview
- Takayoshi Okazaki is an old craftsman who builds transoms. He leaves his sick wife in Nagoya to head to Toyama where their son and daughter-in-law have been transferred to. However, he soon heads back to Nagoya. On his way back, Takayoshi meets a similarly old man named Kinzo who runs an inn. With a sense of shyness, for the first time he shares the feelings of guilt that he has toward his wife. The two talk about their wives: “We don’t talk at all. I tell her to be quiet” (Kinzo), “My wife doesn’t even complain, because I won’t listen” (Takayoshi). Once he gets back to Nagoya, Takayoshi goes to his wife’s sickbed and says while sobbing: “I want to be with you.” The lonely figure of Takayoshi thinking about his wife who is far away in Toyama, the insecurity of old age that manifests when Takayoshi is made to get off the train before his destination due to not having an express ticket, the feeling of guilt toward his wife put into words, and the tears he sheds at his wife’s sickbed; all of these feelings of shyness that Takayoshi has toward his wife are brought out by Ryu Chishu in this drama.
