Overview
Along the theme of Bon dancing, which is performed in Hawaii even today, the TV drama portrays a Japanese immigrant family that is separated by the war and the complex emotions of each family member. It was shot in Wailuku, Lahaina, and other places in Maui, Hawaii. The cast and staff members lived together in a local condominium during the shooting. Directed by Akio Jissoji and written by So Kuramoto, the show aired as a Seibu Special, sponsored by the Saison Group. Won the 38th ACA National Arts Festival Grand Prize. The story takes place in the summer of 1983 in Maui, Hawaii. Kosaku Yamanami is an old first-generation Japanese immigrant. His long-time wife Misa has passed away, and he has left his fifth son and his wife to tend to the barbershop he owns. He spends his days indulging in reminiscence on the beach. One day, his granddaughter pays him a visit from Japan. Her father, Sakutaro, is Kosaku’s fourth son. For a certain reason, Sakutaro was disowned by Kosaku. The granddaughter has brought with her a letter to Misa, her grandmother. Kosaku is not sure what to do. He is happy to see his granddaughter, but he still has a grudge against Sakutaro. Then, Kosaku’s late wife, Misa, gently starts talking to him...
