- Overview
- September 27, 1977, a US Marine Corps tactical reconnaissance plane takes off from Naval Air Facility Atsugi bound for the aircraft carrier Midway on the Pacific. However, just after takeoff, the aircraft’s engine goes on fire with a full tank of fuel. The two crew members bail out with a parachute. They are saved by a Maritime Self‐Defense Force helicopter and get back to base safely. Meanwhile, the plane crashes in a residential area, burning, damaging, and destroying 20 houses in the vicinity. Nine civilians were injured in this accident. Of them, two brothers aged three and one, respectively, get burned across their entire body and die before dawn the following day. The brothers’ 26-year-old mother is burned severely as well; she dies on January 26, 1982, 52 months after the accident. After the death of the victim, Kazue Doshida, her memoir was published, and it provoked a big reaction. Afureru Ai ni is a TV drama based on this memoir. It realistically depicts how an ordinary happy family is tragically destroyed in an instant. The cast included Mitsuko Oka, Naoya Makoto, Kenji Takaoka, Chiaki Azuma, Junko Miyauchi, and Makiko Otonashi. It aired on the Thursday Golden Drama slot. The cruel tragedy brought tears to many a viewer.
