- It is the 31st installment of Renzoku Terebi Shosetsu. It is a woman’s biography broadcast around the world and achieved a record audience rating of 62.9%. In the late days of the Meiji era, the seven-year-old Oshin is sent from her impoverished village in Yamagata to be a live-in domestic service worker. She studies while working as a babysitter, but she is falsely accused as a thief and gets kicked out of her employer’s house. Next, she becomes a live-in domestic service worker at a rice wholesale store in Sakata. There, she becomes friends with the owner’s daughter, Kayo, learns reading, writing, and arithmetic from the matriarch, and gets promoted to head servant. However, Kayo elopes with Kota, a farmer activist, even though Kota and Oshin were in love with each other. Oshin quits the store and heads to Tokyo become a hairdresser. She meets and marries a textile trader named Tanokura. As their house is destroyed by the Great Kanto earthquake, they move to Tanokura’s parents’ house. However, she is harassed by her mother-in-law and leaves the house along with her oldest son Yu. She is reunited with Kota in Sakata. He introduces her to a job selling fish, and she goes to Mie to become a traveling merchant. Having failed in a reclamation project in Saga, Tanokura decides to move to Manchuria and comes to bid Oshin farewell. However, once he sees Oshin at work, he decides to join her again. Including Hatsuko, her newly adopted daughter, Oshin is now blessed with four children, but she later loses her oldest son Yu and her husband Tanokura. After the war, the store Oshin opened is passed down to Hitoshi, her second son, and grows into a business with multiple branches. However, Oshin feels she has lost something precious in exchange for abundance. Faced with a sense of futility, she sets off on a journey.
