- Overview
- “Sorry to ask, but where do you go to college?” That is what Yoshio Nakategawa, who attends an industrial college regarded as a third- or fourth-rate institution, is asked when he slips into a party held by students from the University of Tokyo and Keio University. This is the first scene of Fuzoroi no Ringotachi; it represents the theme for the series as a whole. Nakategawa and his classmates Kenichi Iwata and Minoru Nishidera all have a strong inferiority complex about their academic background, and they rarely meet girls. They decide to launch a Wandervogel club, through which they get to know Ayako Tanimoto, a very fat girl attending a first-class university, Yoko Mizuno, a nursing school student who lied about her academic background at first, and Harue Miyamoto. In addition, Nakategawa gets involved with Natsue Ibuki, a sex industry worker who graduated from a top-class national university, and her boyfriend Shuichi Honda who graduated from the University of Tokyo. The series revolves around the love, job-hunting, future dreams, and other aspects of these characters. One notable feature is that their inferiority complex about their academic background as well as their romantic affairs are closely related to their families. This hints at things that are more precious to a person than academic background—family, friendship, love, and consideration to others. The Fuzoroi no Ringotachi series continued to Part IV (1997), depicting the discrimination the characters suffer due to their academic background even after joining the workforce.
