Cutting lines that attack the petty bourgeois life style
Overview
“You’re ordinary to the very core!” “Your soul shines less than a one-watt bulb. What’s the point of someone like that living a long life?” Tatsuhiko Sawada is a cameraman whose field of vision has become narrow due to a tumor. He stumbles upon Kazuhiko Mochizuki, his son that he had with his former girlfriend, Miyako Mochizuki. Tatsuhiko gets to know the Mochizuki family, and even then he keeps cursing their petty-bourgeois life style. Kazuhiko and Miyako fight back against Tatsuhiko, but they themselves start questioning whether they are leading the right kind of life. Meanwhile, Kazuhiko’s father, Shoichi, snaps at the others: “I know, I’m a boring guy.” Having faced his own mortality, Tatsuhiko is moved by Shoichi’s dedication to his work. In other words, he is comforted by people who shine less than a one-watt bulb. Criticizing viewers or citizens is considered a taboo in TV. Drama and documentaries are not exception. Taichi Yamada challenges this taboo straight on in Soshun Sukecchi Bukku, presenting a harsh, or perhaps even insulting, critique of the petty-bourgeois way of life. The many words of contempt came from his fundamental questioning of the human existence and were used as a means to shed light upon the petty-bourgeois way of life. In that sense, Soshun Sukecchi Bukku is a very unusual type of soap opera in the history of TV drama.
