- It is the first drama adaptation of Masuji Ibuse’s globally famous atomic-bombing themed novel Black Rain, which shed light upon the issues of nuclear weapons. It depicts the sufferings and sorrows brought about by war. It aired in 1983 as part of 24 Hour Television program. The novel was serialized in the literary magazine Shincho. Its initial title was Mei no Kekkon, but the title was changed to Kuroi Ame during serialization. The TV drama combines both these titles. A film adaptation was released under the direction of Shohei Imamura in 1989. Won the Czechoslovak Television Viewers’ Award (Category 1: Drama shows) in the Golden Prague International Television Festival. Won the 23rd Galaxy Award. Shigematsu Shizuma and his wife Shigeko were exposed to radiation from the atomic bomb in Hiroshima City during the war. The couple are unable to perform hard labor because of the aftereffects, so they are called lazy by their fellow villagers. Their niece Yasuko who lives with them was not harmed by the atomic bomb directly, but she was hit by the subsequent “black rain.” Yasuko reaches marriageable age, but several marriage talks are canceled due to the rumor going around that she is a radiation victim. Shigematsu tries to prove that Yasuko is not a radiation victim. But then, Yasuko contracts an intractable disease...
