- Overview
- A soap opera that depicts a clumsy man’s love for his wife through the character of Koji Tsuruta. Shukichi Isojima is a tailor in Tsukuda, downtown Tokyo. Although very skilled at his job, he is stubborn and lacks compassion. His wife Yoshiko has helped out in the business, all the while putting up with her husband. However, one day she decides she has had enough. “What’s the meaning of my life?” Leaving these words, she bursts out of the house. She tailors shirts herself while also working at a small restaurant. The couple’s son, Shuichi, leaves the house with his mother. Akio Satomi, a live-in employee who did the housework for Shukichi, also moves out and starts living on his own at an apartment. Shukichi has no intention to apologize to his wife. However, unable to bear the loneliness of living alone, he asks her to come back. Yoshiko says she will return only if Shukichi looks her in the eyes and says “I love you” to her. The difficulty of this clumsy middle-aged man to convey his feelings, the loneliness of his wife’s absence, his love for her, and acknowledgement of his wife’s work; these aspects are richly expressed through Koji Tsuruta’s old school shyness and Taichi Yamada’s implicit representations, such as the relationship of Shukichi and Yoshiko and the shirts tailored by Yoshiko.
