Overview
It is a TV series adaptation of an essay collection written by Beat Takeshi about his own childhood. The series depicts the atmosphere, human emotions, and family life in an old town in Tokyo in the 1950s with a humorous and heartfelt touch. In ran for 15 episodes on the Ginga TV Shosetsu slot. From July through August the following year, a sequel titled Zoku Takeshi-kun Hai! ran for 15 episodes on the same slot. At the beginning of the first episode of both series, Beat Takeshi appears and explains the features of the show. This became a popular segment. Takejiro lives in an old town in Tokyo. Although he is a very good professional house painter, he has bad drinking habits. His wife, Mariko, on the other hand, is passionate about her children’s education. She is both a strict and gentle mother. Among the couple’s three children, the two elder sons are talented. In contrast, their youngest son Takeshi is a rascal and always up to mischief. The family leads a very poor life, but they make the most of it, and Takeshi steadily grows up. When Takeshi is in sixth grade, he falls in love with a girl who has transferred to his class from another school. However, the girl has poor health. How will this love unfold?
