- Running from 1981 to 1982, the Kita no Kuni Kara TV series revolves around a father and son who move to a nature-rich area in Hokkaido. Even after the series ended, TV specials were created for another 21 years. Kita no Kuni Kara ‘87: Hatsukoi is considered one of the best among them. Won the 3rd ACA National Arts Festival Best Picture Award. The script won the 36th Shogakukan Literature Award. Jun is a 9th grader who is obsessed with electric appliances. He carries around a pair of pliers at all times and goes about disassembling whatever appliances he can lay hands on. This earns him the nickname “Pliers.” This Jun the Pliers falls in love. When he went to see a wind power turbine that is dumped behind a large farmhouse nearby, he fell in love at first sight with a beautiful girl called Rei, the farmer’s daughter. The two harbor feelings for, and start seeing, each other. One day, they talk about the future. Rei tells Jun that she will go to a high school in Tokyo after graduating. Jun wants to do the same, but he finds it hard to tell his father Goro. So, he comes up with a secret plan to go to Tokyo. He sends a letter to his aunt in Tokyo, but... The TV special has many famous moving scenes, such as where Jun listens to Yutaka Ozaki’s “I Love You” in a barn after Rei leaves as well as the final scene where he parts with his father.
