- Overview
- Kozo Miyajima (Chishu Ryu) is in his twilight years. One day, he learns that his son, Ryuichi (Naoki Sugiura), has only three months to live. Seeing his emaciated son, Kozo is stupefied and cannot find any words. It makes him snap at his divorced wife who comes to see Ryuichi: “I’m not talking to you!” “I’m going to die soon, and I have nothing to show for it,” says Ryuichi in tears, terrified of his approaching death. His parents’ divorce, trouble with his own wife—Ryuichi feels that he has lost not only his job but also his family. After these family conflicts, Kozo surprisingly invites Ryuichi to stay at his humble dwelling in Tateshina Kogen, Nagano. There, father and son try to spend their remaining days with family. While gazing at the trees beginning to take on the hues of autumn, the aged Kozo says to his son with a peaceful smile: “Stop talking about things yet to happen, enjoy the now.” Ryuichi peacefully sheds tears in response, and perhaps thanks to having the family together again. Chishu Ryu’s smile and Naoki Sugiura’s peaceful tears beautifully express the reinvigorating impact of accepting the cycle of life and death and embracing the present moment.
