- Overview
- This jidaigeki (period drama) series set in the feudal era revolves around the stormy life of Date Masamune who established the foundation for the 620,000-koku Sendai Domain in one generation. It achieved an average audience rating of 39.7%, the highest ever rating among Taiga drama series. Based on the novel Date Masamune by Sohachi Yamaoka. In the opening segment of Episode 46, James Miki appears as himself in the main hall of Sendai Castle and offers a commentary on the Chinese poem “Bajo Shonen Sugu,” which Masamune is believed to have recited to express his state of mind in his later years. In Date Domain, Oshu, Bontenmaru was born as the son of Date Terumune and Yoshihime. He contracted smallpox in childhood and lost sight in his right eye. Despite this challenge, Bontenmaru matures while adhering to the teachings of his mentor Kosai Soitsu. He comes of age, assumes the name Tojiro Masamune, and marries Megohime. He goes on to succeed his father as head of the clan at age 18. Together with Katakura Kojuro, Date Shigezane, and other vassals, he clashes with various domains, expands his territory, and rapidly builds up his power base. He aims to conquer Oshu, and eventually, the whole of Japan. His mother Yoshihime, who has always doted on her second son Kojiro, plots to poison Masamune, but the plot fails. Meanwhile, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, Chief Advisor to the Emperor, tries to put Masamune in a difficult situation on numerous occasions, such as demanding Megohime as a hostage.
