He was born in Gyeongseong, Korea (now Seoul, South Korea), in 1937 but was raised in Tokushima Prefecture. He graduated from Waseda University’s School of Political Science and Economics. After graduating from university, he studied at Scenario Kenkyūjo (Screenwriting Institute), where his coming-of-age graduation project led to an apprenticeship under Toshirō Ide. In 1967, he made his debut as a scriptwriter with the drama Dekkai Seisyun (Great Youth). He made a name for himself with teen dramas, such as Sign wa V (V-sign) and Ore wa Otoko da! In 1983, the drama Kinyōbi no Tsuma-tachi e (To the Wives on Fridays) caused a massive sensation, sparking a nationwide fascination with extramarital affairs and giving rise to the social buzzword “kin-tsuma.” Following this, Danjo Shichi-nin Natsu Monogatari (Summer Story of Seven Men and Women) became another huge hit; its sequel Danjo Shichi-nin Aki Monogatari (Autumn Story of Seven Men and Women) went on to record a peak audience rating of 36.8%. He received the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize and the 13th Kuniko Mukoda Award for 29-sai no Christmas (Christmas at the Age of 29). He has also written many screenplays for films, including such blockbusters as Sengoku Jieitai (Sengoku Self-Defense Force) and Tantei Monogatari (Detective Story). He later ventured into novels and has authored numerous published works. He has been the chairperson of the Writers Guild of Japan since April 2016.
