Nogami Tatsuo

- He was born in Tokyo in 1928. After attending the former Kaisei Junior High School and the former Matsumoto High School, he entered the University of Tokyo’s Department of French Language and Literature in the Faculty of Letters. After graduating, he became a scriptwriter at Daiei Scriptwriter Training School. In 1957, he joined the film studio Nichiei, but the company went bankrupt shortly afterwards. He then apprenticed to a scriptwriter and made his debut as a professional scriptwriter. He wrote numerous screenplays, mainly for Toei, specializing in period dramas and yakuza films. His famous film credits include Nihon Kyōkaku Den (Japanese Yakuza, 1964), Yogiri yo Kon’ya mo Arigatō (A Warm Misty Night, 1967), Teppodama no Bigaku (Aesthetics of a Bullet, 1973), Yagyū Ichizoku no Inbō (Yagyu Clan Conspiracy, 1978), and Onihei Hankacho (Onihei’s Detective Records, 1995). His television credits include Zenigata Heiji (1966–1984, Fuji TV), Aya to Iu Musume (A Girl Called Aya, 1964, NTV), Yatsuhakamura (The Village of Eight Graves, 1969, NET [now TV Asahi]), the Hissatsu series, 1973–1985, ABC), Onna no Isshō (A Woman’s Life, 1985, ABC), Kiheitai (Irregular Unit, 1989, NTV), and Kumogiri Nizaemon (1991, Fuji TV). He died in 2013 at the age of 85.
