Osanai Mieko

Profile
She was born in Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture, in 1930. She graduated from Tsurumi Girls’ High School (now Tsurumi University Senior High School). In 1951, she became a script supervisor for films. She initially aspired to be a film director, but she was told at the time that directing was closed to women. Consequently, she chose a role that would allow her to work at the director’s side. Later, following her marriage and pregnancy, she transitioned to scriptwriting, making her professional debut in 1962 with Nokori no Kōfuku (Remaining Happiness) for the NHK series TV Shiteiseki (TV Reserved Seats). That same year, she gave birth to her eldest son, Gō (the actor and filmmaker Gō Rijū). Subsequently, she divorced her husband. She wrote many of her scripts while raising her son; consequently, her work is deeply infused with her perspectives on education and child-rearing, drawn from her own experiences. One of her famous works, 3-nen B-gumi Kinpachi Sensei (Mr. Kinpachi in Class 3B), became a long-running program with seven seasons and was highly regarded in the educational field. In addition to these works, her prolific writing spanned a wide range of genres, from historical epics, such as the NHK Taiga dramas Tokugawa Ieyasu and Tobu ga Gotoku (As If in Flight), to NHK morning dramas, action shows, and special effects productions. Beyond her writing, she was also actively involved in international humanitarian efforts, dedicating herself to support refugees in conflict zones and founding the Japan Team of Young Human Power (JHP), which focuses on building educational facilities in regions where access is limited. In 1995, she received the Society of Japanese Women in Radio and Television’s Award. She died in 2024 at the age of 94.
