Yajima Masao

- He was born in Kanagawa Prefecture in 1950. He graduated from Toyo University’s Department of English and American Literature. He began writing scripts while working in the corporate sector. In 1976, his work Kaisō-sha (Carrier Cars) won the Honorable Mention at the inaugural Original Television Drama Awards. In 1980, he made his debut as a scriptwriter with Namonaku Mazusiku Utsukushiku (Nameless, Poor, and Beautiful). Following this success, he penned a number of human drama masterpieces, including entries from the Bin Bin series, notably Kyōshi Bin Bin Monogatari (The Story of an Energetic Teacher), which starred Toshihiko Tahara as a passionate educator. He also penned the NHK morning drama series Rinrin to (Dignified), centered on a young protagonist dreaming of developing television technology in the early Showa period. At the same time, he wrote numerous works as a manga author. One of his most acclaimed works, Ningen Kosaten (Human Crossing), created in collaboration with the artist Kenshi Hirokane, was serialized in Big Comic Original from 1980 to 1990. The series drew an immense response and earned him an enthusiastic following. In 2009, he opened Masao Yajima Kyakuhon Juku, a scriptwriting school dedicated to nurturing the next generation of writers. For his drama scripts, he won the Galaxy Encouragement Award in 2000 for Tezuka Osamu Gekijō (Osamu Tezuka Theater), and for his manga originals, he won the Shogakukan Manga Grand Prize in 1986 for Ningen Kōsaten (Human Crossing).
