- He was born in Tokyo in 1942. A graduate of Tokyo Metropolitan Kunitachi Senior High School, he entered the Russian Language Department at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. After graduating from the university, he joined NHK, where he was assigned to the Foreign Broadcast Reception Division of the News Department. Later, due to the division being abolished, he was transferred to the Drama Program Section of the Program Production Department. While working as a drama production crew, he had the opportunity to work alongside distinguished scriptwriters, such as Shinichi Ichikawa, Akira Hayasaka, and Sugako Hashida; these interactions inspired him to begin writing his own scripts. He went freelance in 1980 and has since worked in a wide range of fields as a scriptwriter, non-fiction writer, and novelist. His scriptwriting credits for television include Kyōfu no Kazoku: Geronimo (Geronimo: A Family of Terror, 1983, TBS), Sanga Moyu (Mountains and Rivers Ablaze, 1984, NHK), Shiseikatsu (Private Lives, 1985, NHK), Mujin Eki (The Unmanned Station, 1986, NHK), Bansankai (The Dinner Party, 1988, Yomiuri TV), Sasurai Deka Ryojōhen (Wandering Detective: Sentimental Journey,1988–1995, TV Asahi), Kazoku Monogatari (Family Story, 1990, NHK), Hana Shinju (Flower Love-Suicide,1991, MBS), and Mō Ichido Haru (Spring Once More, 1992, CBC). He has also authored non-fiction books, including Mō Hitotsu no Showa (Another Showa) and The Legend of Shōhei Imamura.
