Jemusumiki

Profile
He was born in Mukden, Manchukuo (now Shenyang, China), in 1934 but was raised in Osaka. During high school, he directed and starred in a play that won first place in the Osaka Prefecture High School Drama Competition. After dropping out of high school, he entered the Haiyuza Theater Company’s Training School but later withdrew before completing the program. He later became an exclusive singer for Teichiku Records, where he served as an opening act for Dick Mine, and he participated in test recordings for Yujirō Ishihara. He was marketed as a rival to Frank Nagai, but he failed to find success, spending 13 years in obscurity, before his breakthrough. After turning 30, his novel Sōshoku Onpu (Ornamental Notes), originally appearing in a literary circle magazine, was selected for reprint in Shinchō magazine. This prompted him to pivot to a writing career, leading him to enroll in Scenario Kenkyūjo (Screenwriting Institute). In 1968, his debut work, Adam no Hoshi (Adam’s Star), was a semi-finalist in the Newcomer Film Scenario Competition. His work caught the eye of the film director Yoshitarō Nomura; the following year, he made his debut as a scriptwriter with the film Yuzuki (Evening Moon). He subsequently established himself as a prominent television drama scriptwriter. His 1985 NHK morning drama series Miotsukushi (The High Tide Mark) recorded a peak audience rating of 55% and won the Japan Literary Award for Best Script. In 1987, he scripted the NHK Taiga historical drama Dokuganryū Masamune (One-Eyed Dragon Masamune), which achieved the highest audience rating in the history of the series, a record that remains unbroken to this day. In 1989, he made his directorial debut with the film Zennin no Jōken (The Political Game). He died in 2025 at the age of 91.
