- He was born in Osaka Prefecture in 1967. After graduating from Nara Ikuei Sr. High School, he studied scriptwriting and made his professional debut at 19 by winning the inaugural Fuji Television Young Scenario Award in 1987. His 1991 Fuji TV series Tokyo Love Story became a huge hit, recording a peak audience rating of 32% and establishing him as a leading figure of the “trendy drama” movement. Since then, he has written numerous television scripts. He received the Kuniko Mukoda Award for Watashitachi no Kyōkasho (Our Textbook, 2007, Fuji TV), the Hashida Award for Mother (2010, NTV), the Art Encouragement Prize for New Artists for Soredemo Ikiteyuku (Still, We Will Carry on Living, 2011, Fuji TV), and the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize for Quartet (2017, NTV). His other notable credits in television include Dokyūsei (Classmates, 1989, Fuji TV), Saiko no Rikon (The Best Divorce, 2013, Fuji TV), and anone (2018, NTV). He has also written the screenplays for smash hit films, such as Hanataba Mitai na Koi wo Shita (We Made a Beautiful Bouquet) in 2021 and Kaibutsu (Monster) in 2023. He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal in 2023.
