Mogi Sosuke

- He was born in Semba, Osaka, in 1910. He dropped out of Doshisha University. He credited growing up in the atmosphere of Semba, the center of Osaka’s culture, with greatly influencing his later writing career. He began writing novels while working for a company. In 1942, he won the Sunday Mainichi Popular Literature Award, launching his professional writing career. He initially wrote scripts for plays and radio, but he transitioned into writing for television when the medium took off. A pioneering scriptwriter in the early days of television broadcasting, he wrote for NHK Taiga the historical dramas Taikōki (The Life of the Taikō) and Momi no Ki wa Nokotta (The Fir Tree Remained). He lived and wrote in the Kansai region throughout his career and excelled at portraying those on the lower rungs of society. He received the Golden Nymph Award for Best Script and Direction at the 1st Monte Carlo Television Festival for Shikkō Mae Sanjuppun (Thirty Minutes Before the Execution), the Grand Prize, and the Education Minister’s Award at the Art Festival for Kamagasaki, as well as the Encouragement Prize and the Excellence Award at the same festival for Michi: Aru Gijutsushas no Hansei (The Road: The Life of an Engineer) and Tokino Naka no Fūkei (Landscapes in Time), respectively. He novelized his semi-autobiographical drama Kettai na Hitobito (The Peculiar People) as Ōtsuchi-ke no Hitobito (The People of the Ōtsuchi Family). He died in 1980.
