- He was born in Tokyo in 1923. He graduated from the University of Tokyo’s Faculty of Letters. While still a student in 1949, he joined the NHK Exclusive Writers’ Division and began writing for radio series. He then entered the television drama field. The drama Basu Dōri Ura (Behind the Bus Street, 1958–1963, NHK) gained a reputation as a masterpiece of family drama. In 1982, he won the Excellence Award at the National Arts Festival for Louise: Sono Kizuna wa (Louise: The Ties That Bind, RKB). His other major television works include Harukanaru Akebia-daira (Distant Akebi-daira,1962, NHK), Shinsyun Fūkei (New Year’s Landscape, 1963, NHK), Ashita Kuru Hito (The One Who Comes Tomorrow, 1965, NHK), Kawa no Mieru Heya (The Room with a River View, 1965, NHK), Buta wo Kau Ie (The House That Keeps Pigs, 1966, NHK), Bungo Torimono Ezu (Bungo’s Detective Story, 1967–1968, NHK), Ten to Chi to (Heaven and Earth, 1969, NHK), Ōi Kumo (Hey, Clouds, 1971, NHK), Man’in Onrei (Full House, 1972, NHK), Fighting Elegy, 1973, NHK), Kaze no Naka no Kodomo (Children in the Wind, 1974, NHK), and Furimukuna Tsurukichi (Don’t Look Back, Tsurukichi, 1974, NHK). He died in July 1998 at the age of 75.
