Endo Shusaku

He was born in Tokyo in 1923. He graduated from Keio University. He was a Catholic. He was one of Japan’s leading novelists and a Person of Cultural Merit. He also received various literary awards. After studying in France, he won the Akutagawa Prize in 1955 for his novel Shiroi Hito (White Men). Many of his novels have been translated into various languages and received high praise overseas. He wrote a wide range of works, from profound historical novels to humorous novels and light-hearted essays. While many of his works were adapted for films and television, he also appeared in many television programs, films, and commercials, which made him popular. He also wrote scripts for television, including Heiwayasan (Mr. Peacemaker, 1959, NHK), Fūsetsu: Aru Senchū-ha (Tails of The Wartime Generation, 1963, NHK), Waga Kao wo (My Face, 1966, TBS), Shinkichōsha (The New Returnee,1968, MBS), Fūfu Gakko (School for Married Couples, 1973, NTV), and Mō Hitori no Francisco (The Other Francisco, 1978, NHK). He died in September 1996 at the age of 73.
