Ogaki Hajime

- He was born in Tokyo in 1910. He dropped out of Hosei University. He was the son of the novelist Kōroku Satō. The poet Hachirō Satō was his elder half brother, and the novelist Aiko Satō was his younger half sister. He looked up to Seika Mayama as his mentor. He was involved in the labor movement, and after the war, he continued to write plays while running a bookstore in Omori, Tokyo. He wrote numerous plays, many of which were staged by the Zenshinza theater company. His television scripts include Hanare Inoshishi (The Lone Boar, 1960, NHK), Sengoku Hijō (Sengoku Ruthlessness, 1960, NTV), Kaerazaru Kadode (Departure With No Return,1960, NHK), Atarashiki Ashita no Kuru Hi wo (The Coming of a New Tomorrow, 1961, NET [now TV Asahi]), Murasaki Shikibu Emaki (Murasaki Shikibu Picture Scroll, 1962, TBS), Koshū (Lonely Grief, 1962, Fuji TV), Saigō Takamori (1963, NHK), and Mamiya Rinzō (1964, Tokyo Channel 12 [now TV Tokyo]). His numerous adaptations include Kunisada Chūji, Yoshinobu Inochigoi (A Plea for Yoshinobu’s Life, 1957, Radio Tokyo [now TBS]), and Tosa-ken (based on the story Hitokiri Izō [Izo the Manslayer], 1960, Fuji TV). All were based on the original works of his master, Seika Mayama. He died in 1979 at the age of 69.
