He was born in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, in 1929. He spent his childhood in Pyongyang, Busan, and Sinuiju in the former Korea, following his father’s professional assignments. In his fourth year of junior high school, he entered the Naval Academy. On the day the atomic bomb was dropped in 1945, he was serving as a volunteer and providing relief in Hiroshima. After the war, he aspired to become a writer, so he entered Waseda University’s Department of Japanese Language and Literature. After graduating from university, he won a radio drama contest held by New Japan Broadcasting System (now Mainichi Broadcasting System) with his work Haha no Rirekisho (Mother’s Resume). He studied under the playwright Hideji Hojō. After working as a member of the Directing Department at NET (now TV Asahi), he made his debut as a scriptwriter, winning the Encouragement Prize at the Art Festival for his work Shōkon (The Scar) in 1960. He became known as the “magician of ratings” after the NHK morning drama series Mayuko Hitori (Mayuko Alone) recorded a peak audience rating of 55.6%. He continued to work as a popular scriptwriter, producing hit works, such as Nonomura Byouin Monogatari (Nonomura Hospital Story). His many accolades include the Encouragement Prize at the Art Festival for Kobata (The Sub-looms) in 1962, the Mantaro Kubota Award for Inochi Aru Hi wo (While There Is Life) in 1964, and the Prague International Television Festival Special Award for Kuroi Ame/Meino Kekkon (Black Rain: My Niece’s Marriage) in 1983. He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal in 1992 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, Fourth Class in 1999.
