Otsu Koichi

- He was born in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture, in 1929. While studying at Bunka Gakuin’s Department of Art, he started the literary magazine Scenario Shinjin (Scenario Newcomer). In 1954, he joined Toho Film Literature Department as a trainee scriptwriter and studied under film director Hisatora Kumagai. In 1958, he joined Z Pro, a scriptwriting collective comprising emerging writers. In the same year, he made his debut as a scriptwriter with the television drama Dial 110 (1957–1964, NTV). His television scripts include Tōi Kyōkoku (The Distant Canyon, 1960, Radio Tokyo [now TBS]), Shichinin no Keiji (The Seven Detectives, 1961-1969, TBS), Getsuyōbi no Otoko (The Monday Man, 1961–1964, TBS), Taiyō wo Sagase (In Search of the Sun, 1964, TBS), Doyō to Getsuyō no Aida (Between Saturday and Monday, 1964, TBS), which won the 1965 Prix Italia, Doyōbi no Tora (The Saturday Tiger, 1966, TBS), Jōhatsu (The Vanishing, 1968, TBS), Ukiyo-e Onna Nezumi Kozō (Ukiyo-e: Female Robin Hood, 1971, Fuji TV), Haru no Motsure (Spring Entanglement, 1974, NTV), and Rekishi no Namida (Tears of History, 1980, TBS). His credits also include numerous adaptations. Furthermore, he worked as a broadcast writer on programs such as Keizo’s Show (1962, TBS).
