- He was born in Tokyo in 1910. He dropped out of Keika Commercial High School. After working as an extra in films, he made his debut as a screenwriter with Haha no Chizu (Mother’s Map, 1942, Toho). He followed this with the screenplay adaptation of Jun Takami’s novel Ima Hitotabi no (Once More, 1947, Toho). He also worked with director Akira Kurosawa, writing the screenplay for Subarashiki Nichiyōbi (One Wonderful Sunday, 1947, Toho) and co-writing Yoidore Tenshi (Drunken Angel, 1948, Toho). He was a classmate of Akira Kurosawa at Kuroda Elementary School (now Daigo Junior High School) in Bunkyo Ward. His 1973 novel Fuyu no Hana Yuko (Winter Flower—Yuko) was nominated for the Naoki Prize. It was adapted into television dramas on NET (now TV Asahi) in 1974 and on Fuji TV in 1990. His television scripts include Sannin no Tabiyakusha to Daikansama (Three Traveling Actors and the Magistrate, 1953, NHK), Kawaii Nakōdo (The Charming Matchmaker, 1958, Osaka TV), Kawaranu Mono wa Kawaranai (Things Remain Unchanged, 1960, Radio Tokyo [now TBS]), Teinen (Retirement, 1963, NHK), Shichinin no Mago (The Seven Grandchildren, 1964–1966, TBS), and Salaryman Tanjō (The Birth of a Salaryman, 1965, NHK). His credits also include numerous adaptations. He died in 1993 at the age of 83.
