Namikawa Ryo

- He was born in Shimane Prefecture in 1905. He was a broadcast writer and doctor of literature. The Avatamsaka Sutra was his life’s work. He was also a translator, English literature scholar, and critic. His range of expertise as a critic was extremely broad, covering broadcasting, art, and jazz, and he wrote many books on these topics. He was the father of Banri Namikawa, a famous photographer of ruins known for his photo collection Silk Road. The book A Journey Through Mediterranean History (1967, Shueisha) was co-authored by father and son. As a broadcast writer, he wrote many scripts for television, including Ningyōshi Chūkichi (Chukichi the Puppeteer, 1954, NTV) and Nyonin Rentō (The Litany of Women, 1958, Chubu Nippon Broadcasting [CBC]). After graduating from Tokyo Imperial University, he worked at NHK’s International Department. He then moved to Mainichi Broadcasting System (MBS). He served as a professor at Bunka Gakuin and Nihon University and was a judge for the ACA National Arts Festival. After World War II, he translated contemporary American literature, including Upton Sinclair’s masterpiece the Lanny Budd series and John Dos Passos’ U.S.A. trilogy. He also worked to introduce Indian art. He died in May 1984 at the age of 78.
