- He was born in Aomori Prefecture in 1935. While attending Aomori Prefectural High School, he developed a passion for haiku, tanka, and poetry and soon showed remarkable talent in these fields. He entered Waseda University’s School of Education, and he won the 2nd Tanka Kenkyu Newcomer Award at the Chekhov Festival. In 1957, he published his debut anthology, Ware ni Gogatsu wo (May for Me), followed the next year by his first collection of poetry, Sora ni wa Hon (Books in the Sky). He subsequently transitioned to radio drama, with his first work Giono being broadcast by RKB Mainichi. His second radio drama Ichirō Nakamura (RKB) received the President Award at the Commercial Broadcasting Competition. He became a successful scriptwriter in radio and television. In 1964, his broadcast poetry drama Yamanba (The Mountain Witch, NHK) won the Grand Prix at the Prix Italia. The broadcast poetry drama Taireifuku (The Official Court Dress, CBC) won the Encouragement Prize at the Art Festival. He also maintained a prolific career across multiple fields, including playwriting, filmmaking, criticism, photography, and essay writing. He was especially devoted to the theater, and he founded the theater laboratory Tenjō Sajiki at the age of 31. Works such as Kegawa no Marie (La Marie-Vison) and Jashumon (The Gate of Heresy) garnered significant acclaim domestically and internationally. As a film director, his works include Sho wo Suteyo Machi e Deyō (Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets!) and Den-en ni Shisu (Pastoral: To Die in the Country). He died in May 1983 at the age of 47.
