Onoda Isamu

He was born in Yotsuya, Tokyo, in 1920. He graduated from Chuo University. He was a member of the Tokyo Broadcasting Theater Company. After working as a radio and television actor, he joined Torirō Miki’s Jodan Kōbō (The Comedy Workshop) to work as a broadcast writer, scriptwriter, and playwright. He became a successful scriptwriter with the NHK morning drama series Ohana-han, which was broadcast from 1966 to 1967. This drama became a national hit, with an average audience rating of 45.8% and peaking at 56.4%. The lead actress, Fumie Kashiyama, became an iconic morning drama heroine. He wrote numerous scripts, and his film credits include Where Are You Going, Morishige?, starring Hisaya Morishige. His stage works include Omoroi Onna and Yukimaroge, both starring Mitsuko Mori. His accolades include the Encouragement Prize at the Art Festival for his original story, Shōrisha (The Victor) in 1956, the Mantarō Kubota Award for Ohana-han in 1967, the Education Minister’s Art Encouragement Prize (broadcasting category) in 1971, NHK’s Broadcasting Culture Awards in 1972 for Otoko wa Dokyō (A Man’s Grit), and the Grand Prize of NAB Awards (now the JBA Awards) for Seishun no Mon (The Gate of Youth) in 1976. He was awarded the Purple Ribbon Medal in 1987 and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, Fourth Class in 1993. He died in 1997.
