Sasaki Mamoru

Profile
He was born in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture, in 1936. He graduated from Meiji University’s Japanese Literature in School of Arts and Letters. After graduating from university, he began his career writing for radio comedy shows and dramas. He made his television debut as a scriptwriter in 1963 with Gendaikko (The Modern Generation). He studied under Toshirō Ishidō and Tsutomu Tamura. In 1964, he joined Sōzōsha, an independent production company founded by Nagisa Ōshima and other creative partners, where he co-wrote several screenplays for Ōshima’s films. During the same period, he found a kindred spirit in the TBS director Akio Jissōji, after being introduced by Ōshima. The pair produced several special-effects television series, such as Ultraman and Kaiki Daisakusen (Operation: Mystery!). He later teamed up with ABC producer Hisashi Yamauchi to launch a series of highly unconventional dramas, including Gessuikasumokukinkin (Monday through Friday) and Onimotsu Konimotsu (Big Baggage, Small Baggage). In the late 1970s, he relocated to Yamanaka (now Kaga City) in Ishikawa Prefecture, where he wrote the scripts for the Pola TV Drama series Kōrogibashi (Cricket Bridge), which was set and filmed in Yamanaka. In the field of manga, he was the creator of numerous hits, notably Shinji Mizushima’s Otoko Doahō Kōshien (The Absolute Fool’s Kōshien). He also demonstrated his diverse talents by writing lyrics and founding a magazine. He died in 2006 at the age of 70.
