Katsura Ichiro

- He was born in Tokyo in 1917. After graduating from Keio University, he worked for Toho, before devoting himself to script writing. He was active in both variety programs and dramas during the dawn of television, including Dial 110 (1957–1964, NTV). He won the Art Festival Award for the radio drama Buttsuke Honban/Hime Jutai,/Jinmei (Act Without Rehearsal/Princess in Critical Condition/Human Life, 1957, Radio Tokyo [now TBS]), and the Grand Prize at the 7th Commercial Broadcasting Competition (now the JBA Awards) for Mokuba no Yume: Aru Bunkō no Monogatari (The Dream of a Wooden Horse: The Story of a Branch School, 1959, Radio Tokyo [now TBS]). In 1962, he collaborated with Tsuyoshi Abe and Nagayoshi Akasaka to adapt the epic television drama Ningen no Joken (The Human Condition). The 26-episode series, starring Go Kato and Yukiko Fuji, was produced by Daiei TV Room for TBS. His film credits include the 1954 adaptation of Tatsuo Hori’s Kaze Tachinu (The Wind Rises), which he co-wrote with Toshirō Murayama. The film was produced by Tokyo Eiga, distributed by Toho, directed by Kōji Shima, and starred Yoshiko Kuga. He served as a director of the Television and Radio Writers’ Association of Japan. He died on January 21, 1986, at the age of 69.
