Ishido Toshiro

He was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1932. During the period of educational reform, he opposed the shift to coeducation and dropped out of high school in his second year. After passing the university entrance examination, he entered Hiroshima University a year ahead of his peers. However, he dropped out of the university and then entered the University of Tokyo’s Department of German Language and Literature in the Faculty of Letters. After graduating, he joined Shochiku Ofuna Studio and worked as an assistant director. In 1960, he made his debut as a screenwriter with Taiyōno Hakaba (The Sun’s Burial). He played a central role in the revolutionary film movement known as Shochiku Nouvelle Vague together with Nagisa Ōshima; however, in 1961, when the film Nihon no Yoru to Kiri (Night and Fog in Japan), which he co-wrote the screenplay with Ōshima, was cancelled, he left Shochiku and became a member of the Sōzōsha, a film production headed by Ōshima. He later parted ways with Ōshima and began writing scripts for television series. He major television credits include Magma Taishi (Ambassador Magma, 1966–1977, Fuji TV), Kaettekita Ultraman (Return of Ultraman, 1971–1972, TBS), Hissatsu Shikakenin (The Deadly Arrangers, 1972–1973, ABC), Akahige (Red Beard, 1972, NHK), Nire-ke no Hitobito (The People of the Nire Family, 1972, NHK), Kozure Ōkami (Lone Wolf and Cub, 1973, NTV), and Nanase Futatabi (Nanase Returns, 1979, NHK). He died in November 2011 at the age of 79.
