- Overview
- It is NHK Osaka’s first TV drama that participated in the ACA National Arts Festival, and it won the 11th ACA National Arts Festival Encouragement Award. It was created by Yukio Doi based on a folktale drama theme, arranged and performed by the Shigeyama brothers, who were famous at the time for their new style of kyogen, traditional Japanese comic theater. The story is not just humorous but also portrays profound married love. It adopted kyogen as an experimental method of expression; the influence of kyogen is seen in the actors’ speech and movements. For instance, when cutting a tree, the actors themselves would imitate the sound of a saw cutting through the tree. As it was a live broadcast, the cast members were very busy throughout the show, hastily fixing their make-up during scene transitions and going from this set to that. Directed by Yoshihiko Okamoto with the assistance of Tsutomu Wada. After Hyoroku to Soba no Hana won the award, Yoshihiko Okamoto got a transfer order from Osaka to Tokyo. However, he decided to quit NHK to join KR Television (current TBS Television), which had just been launched. A musical adaptation of the show aired in 1961, which incorporated elements of dance instead of kyogen.
