- Overview
- Won the 18th ACA National Arts Festival Encouragement Award. The screenwriter, Shinobu Hashimoto, tried to depict the state of Japanese democracy in a legal drama on the model of the American film 12 Angry Men. Okuni is known in town as a mean old woman whose only enjoyment is to cause trouble to others. One day, she is appointed as one of 11 members of the Committee for the Inquest of Prosecution to investigate a case where the yakuza, organized crime syndicate, smashed down the house of a middle-aged woman who is a day laborer. However, the Committee is unable to find any solid proof as the gangsters have deviously concealed the evidence. Not only that, the gangsters threaten and coax Okuni to buy her off. In the end, the accuser withdraws the lawsuit. Although Okuni has never been involved in politics or court cases, she develops a strong conviction to uphold justice... The title, “Shozuka no Basan,” refers to Datsueba, an ogress who strips the clothes of the dead who arrive at the Sanzu River, and intends to equate Okuni with Datsueba.
