- The word cartero (Karutero) in the title means “mailman” in Spanish. This heartful human drama by producer Fukuko Ishii and the TBS film production team won the 18th ACA National Arts Festival Encouragement Award. It starred a non-Japanese actor and was produced in cooperation with a Spanish TV station. It was a pioneering example of international co-production drama. Mitsuko Sakai grew up as a Buddhist nun. After moving to Spain, she converts to Catholicism and becomes a nun at a nunnery in a sleepy village. The Spanish people learn about this and send Mitsuko letters of encouragement. The villagers are moved by the pile of letters that arrive. Thinking that Mitsuko’s parents miss their daughter, the villagers ask the mailman Carlos to deliver these letters to Japan. Carlos is a nice middle-aged man from the village. He is so ignorant of the world that he avoids going to the toilet during the flight because he is worried about what will happen to the urine after that. He manages to get to Japan, a land unknown to him. However, Mitsuko’s parents are not happy to hear that she has converted to Catholicism...
