- Overview
- This first installment of Taiga drama depicts the life of Ii Naosuke, the Tairo (chief minister) who opposed the principle of excluding foreigners and took decisive action to open Japan’s doors to the outside world, which led to his assassination in the Sakuradamon Incident. Naosuke was the 14th son of Ii Naonaka, 14th daimyo (feudal lord) of the Hikone Domain. He received a petty stipend of 300 sacks of rice and was forced to live as a dependent in a mansion named Umoreginoya for more than a decade. Mocking himself as a recluse, he engrossed himself in study of Japanese classical literature, tea ceremony, horse riding, and other hobbies and avoided getting involved in politics. However, his encounter with Japanese classical literature scholar Nagano Shume and Shume’s lover Murayama Taka sets the wheels of destiny in motion. The leading actor, Onoe Shoroku II, accepted the offer on condition that it would not interfere with his kabuki schedule. For this reason, he would arrive at the studio at 10 p.m., and shooting would continue until dawn. At the time, there was the Five-Company Agreement that prevented actors exclusively affiliated with a film company to appear on television. However, the producer, Akira Aikawa, wanted Keiji Sata, an actor exclusively affiliated with Shochiku, to play Nagano Shuzen, so he visited Sata’s house every day and successfully persuaded him to accept the role. This led to collapse of the Five-Company Agreement, and Chikage Awashima, who was also exclusively affiliated with Shochiku, played the heroine Taka.
