- Overview
- This two part series that ran on the Toshiba Sunday Theater slot and is based on the namesake book, a compilation of correspondence between Makoto Kono and Michiko Oshima. Miko is a high school student. She suffers from an intractable disease that causes facial chondrosarcoma. While staying at Osaka University Hospital, she meets a boy called Mako staying in the same hospital wing. Mako is studying for a university entrance examination. Both 18 years old and fans of the Hanshin Tigers, they find a kindred spirit in each other and begin a correspondence. Their correspondence continues after Miko is admitted to Doshisha University in Kyoto and Mako is admitted to Chuo University in Tokyo. Even after Miko’s disease relapses and she is hospitalized again, Mako continues his part-time job as a beer vendor at Osaka Station’s platform during the summer break to keep Miko’s spirits up. Once the summer break ends and Mako returns to Tokyo, their correspondence becomes a great support for Miko in her struggle against the disease. Mako continues his part-time job to make long distance calls to Miko and keep her spirits up, as well as saving up his money to go and visit her at Osaka University Hospital. The love between the two deepens even more. However, Miko loses half of her face due to surgery, and her condition gets even worse. And, on the day before Mako’s 22nd birthday, Miko passes away.
